This post is the second in a series about setting up and maintaining a Premium Shop on Cafepress. Go here for part one.

Unlike most other POD services, Cafepress offers bulk editing tools for use in premium shops. It can still be a bit time consuming when setting up a new shop and adding sections, but there are a few tips to make the process go faster.

When I set up my first shop, I created a new section and named it “master”. I then proceeded to put every single product Cafepress offers in that section. I added all my markups to the products and then made the section a hidden section. I also rearranged the products into the order that I like them. I left all the products blank, because this section will only be used to import items into other sections.

Here is how my workflow usually goes when creating a new section with items for sale. I add a new section, set the title and category, and select the graphic I’m using to be set as the section header. Then, instead of selecting “add new products” I select “import products from another section”. I choose my “master” section and import the whole thing. I use the bulk tools to apply my graphic to all the products at once. Then I scroll down through the section and check the boxes of products I don’t want to offer with this particular graphic, and then select “remove items” from the drop down menu. I check the “select all” box and enter the title and description for the products. The prices are already set since they were imported from my master section.

So now I have a new section, all the products have graphics, titles, descriptions and are priced within ten minutes or so. (This method will only work if your graphic has a white background. If you are wanting a full bleed background then you will need to upload multiple images with the correct dimensions to fit your products, or else they may look really bad) I’m somewhat of a perfectionist so consider this type of section to be a bit rough, but at least it’s there (and hopefully being picked up by google). A week or two later if I’m having a “bad design day” or feel like doing some shop maintenance, I’ll come back and revisit the section. I’ll update some images (such as adding a full bleed background to some items) and rewrite descriptions for individual products to try and improve my seo (search engine optimization).

I like this way of doing things because I have a short attention span and it provides me with the “instant gratification” of getting a section completed in a short amount of time. Then I can come back later and tweak it. It’s a good idea to revisit all your older sections periodically to update a few things and keep the content fresh.
