Cafepress announced yesterday the acquisition of ImageKind, a print on demand company specializing in fine art prints, complete with matting and framing services.

Cafepress announcment and press release.

I opened up a free gallery on ImageKind about two years ago. I was pleased with the prints I ordered for myself and I got quite a few compliments on my art, but no sales. A couple things bugged me about the service. First, when I registered with my username and password, I didn’t realize that my username automatically became the name of my gallery. With no way to change it without emailing support. I also wasn’t crazy about the fact that they also sell traditional art by classic artists (Picasso, etc.) You can buy that stuff anywhere.

So, there has been some speculating about what Cafepress will do with Imagekind. Ironically, I’ve sold quite a few framed prints through Cafepress of the same images that I have in my Imagekind gallery. Hopefully Cafepress’ marketing power will bring a bit more traffic to the site.
