A Day in the Life of a Self Employed T-Shirt Designer

August 27th, 2008 · 3 Comments

I arise at the crack of 10:30 am, brush my teeth and do all that “morning stuff” then head to my computer. Check email, sales reports, news of goings on in the print on demand world, and get my morning dose of lolcats.

11:00 am – Create and upload a couple quick designs. Do some light store maintenance such as freshening up old descriptions.

12:00 pm – Meet my mom and sister for lunch and some light shopping.

1:30 pm – Turn on the SciFi channel and work on some more complex stuff, such as scanning my hand drawn designs and recreating them in Illustrator.

3:00 pm – Take a break to play a round of Lego Star Wars (The Original Trilogy).

3:45 pm – Spend some time researching new niches, uploading store feeds to Google base, checking search engine placement, and looking at competing shops.

4:30 pm – Change gears and work on some of my other projects. Photography, painting and selling hand screen printed cards and baby clothes on Etsy. There’s also that *cough*StarTrek book I’ve always wanted to write.

5:30 pm – Eat dinner and catch up on chores. Run errands, watch tv and chill out for a while.

9:00 pm – Back to designing. I check my idea notebook and my list of designs I need to add. Design and upload ad nauseum.

10:30 pm – Shower.

11:00 pm – Work on affiliate websites, update blogs and other marketing tools such as Facebook, Squidoo, Twitter, Flickr, etc.

1:30-2:00 am – Bedtime.

Unfortunately, this is all fiction. But it is my dream to be completely self employed someday. I want the freedom and flexibility to be able to work when I want to and take spontaneous trips out of town. I want to earn a living solely from my creative abilities. But most importantly, I don’t want to get up at 7:30 in the morning. In fact, I think that’s always been my secret goal. To be my own boss so I can sleep in. Pathetic but true.

So I’ve set a concrete goal for myself. I want to be in a position to quit my job in two years. August of 2010. That should give my employer enough time to hire someone else so I can train them and be out before Christmas.

T-Minus 850 days to freedom from the working world.

I don’t think you’re alone there in feeling like your primary motivation is sleeping in. I could work like a demon upwards of ten hours a day if only I were allowed to do it between about 6pm to 4am.

Someday! Someday soon, I hope :)

I’ve been pretty much living your dream for the last couple of months except for my Saturday job. I found that I enjoyed getting up early when I didn’t have to work. Anyway back to work from next week.

Now a days self employment is also booming because with affiliate marketing many peoples are looking for this because they don’t need any entrepreneur for such type of business.
