I had been using CPShop on my own domain for about a year with few results. It was fairly easy to set up, even though I could never figure out how to get it looking exactly the way I wanted it (mainly the title and description fonts). But for some reason, even after a year, my traffic was awful. My affiliate site that I set up with CPShop (around the same time) and basically left to rot has pulled in almost six times the amount of traffic, for reasons I can’t explain.

About two months ago I decided to scrap the whole CPShop thing and rebuild the site using Wordpress. So far, the results are promising. My traffic has increased, search engine standing is slowly rising, and I’ve had two shop sales so far that I’ve tracked from my website to my Cafepress store.

Benefits of using Wordpress:

  • Fairly easy to install and use with minimal html knowledge
  • It’s Free!
  • Not using CPShop means you can direct your links to any POD, and change them at will without having to rebuild your entire website. A very important feature after recent events at Cafepress.
  • Wordpress has approximately one billion free themes to choose from, many can be customized with your own images and colors, and most are SEO optimized.
  • Here’s what I did. First I installed the raw html plugin which allows you to use html in Wordpress posts. I then inserted my own images of my designs, using one post for each section. Each image links to the corresponding section at Zazzle or Cafepress. I set up a widget with html links to each post/section. And I use the categories and tags as my keywords.

The great thing about this format is that your “sections” are always available through the direct links, and you can use it as a blog at the same time, posting about new designs, sales, etc. Regular updates keep the content fresh and keep Google happy.

I don’t know if you have seen it already, but there is a plugin for WordPress that will insert all the products from a certain section into any post or page.

I would love to see how you have it setut…
but I remember that you’re hesitant about posting links to your shops or designs. Would you email me a link then so that it’s not public? Thanks!
